The Counseling Program

I make it a point each year to practice and learn each child's name.  Being personable with the children goes a long way.  I enjoy learning who they are and it helps the students know that I am a safe person.  All of the students at OBES will visit with me in one or more of the following ways: large group counseling, small group, or individual.

I have a wonderfully unique role as a counselor and that is to hear what each student has to say without being judged.

Through the Mississippi Curriculum, students can talk to me and self-refer if they need to. I encourage the students to let their parents know.  If there is a significant issue, I let them know that I am calling you.  If there is a need for ongoing counseling, then parents will have to give permission .

I can also help connect you to other resources that may help you and your family.

Large Group Counseling

We will use the program:  Core Essentials.
The students will learn various character traits throughout the school year.  I visit with classes once a month.  Please ask them about what they learned in counseling.

Small Group Counseling

Small groups are based on data collected from teachers/observations for students who may need more help with improving social, emotional and behavioral skills.

Small groups are also based on various life experiences such as grief, divorce, parent in the military, etc.

You may request that your child receive small group counseling or you will be notified if the teacher/counselor/administration believes your child will benefit.  You may choose for your child to participate or you may choose not to.

Individual Counseling

Individual counseling is for specific needs of the students and their families.  Anyone can refer a child for counseling (including the child), but parents decide if they want their child to receive more than what I do with counseling in the classroom.  I can also refer you to other agencies if you prefer.

This is one of my classroom lessons from 2018-2019.  Students were asked to think of something they wanted to accomplish in 2019.  We discussed the meaning of meeting a goal.  They built this goal out of legos.  This activity required them to think for themselves and make their own decision.

Here is a peek at the form I usually use when talking with students.
